Introduction/Background: Tawam Hospital’s journey in organ donation began with initial stakeholder discussion in 2018. This led to the establishment of an official organ donation organigram in September 2019. At the time, raising awareness about organ donation was a key priority in achieving our goal. In 2018, selected staff were nominated and sent for external conferences and workshops to build foundational knowledge. By 2019, a hospital-wide awareness campaign was launched by the nursing team, with strong support from physicians through webinars, face-to-face presentations, organ donation booths and integration into nursing orientation programs. Since the organ donation process starts in ED and continues through the ICU- including the identification of potential donors, determination of death by neurological criteria, and donor management-focused education in critical care areas became essential.
In 2019, the UAE National Committee for Organ Donation and Transplantation formally introduced the organ donation process to the critical care support staff in ICU. In view of empowering the nurses, physicians, and respiratory therapists-with the leadership and guidance of critical care ADON and the ICU chair, the Organ Donation Workshop was initiated as a vital step in building capacity and fostering a culture of donation.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of Organ Donation Workshop’s pre and post test results was conducted, focusing on year 2020 to 2023 as a term of interest. In 2019 to 2020 our focus was more on awareness to all Tawam employees along with workshops for critical care staff. During 2021 to 2022 the main focus was intensive training for only critical care staff. The pre test results in 2021 to 2022 were improved compared to year 2020. In 2023, the momentum was sustained.
Results: Hospital-wide awareness attended by around 600 multidisciplinary members and about 220 staff from ICU and PICU nursing and physician along with some of ED and OR staff. All critical care nurses and physicians are confident OD champions. Category of education provided and post course results were excellent as shown in the graph.
The education on Organ Donation and procurement has produced confident organ donation champions and management of organ donor made easy which produced Tawam as an Organ Donation Unit. The topics included in the workshops are based on standards of practices.
Conclusion: The education has produced our own facilitators and instructors for workshops. Assessment, determination and declaration of death by neurological criteria is conducted by certified intensivists. Tawam Hospital is the only one ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management system accredited hospital for organ donation in the UAE focusing on donor identification, management, counselling to families of deceased donor, and retrieval of organs.
