Background: Organ donation is a critical component of modern medical practice, yet it faces significant challenges in terms of public awareness and participation. In China, a multifaceted approach involving hospitals, the mass media, and the Red Cross Society has been implemented to enhance organ donation and transplantation efforts. This study examines the roles of these stakeholders in creating a comprehensive and effective organ donation education and publicity network.
Methods: The analysis is based on a review of existing literature, policy documents, and practical initiatives undertaken by hospitals, the mass media, and the Red Cross Society in China. The study also draws on data from the China Organ Donation Administrative Center (CODAC) and examines various educational and promotional activities implemented across different levels.
Results: In the communication and education of organ donation in China, hospitals, the mass media, and the Red Cross each play important roles, forming a multi-level and widely covered publicity and education network:
• Hospital-Level Activities: Hospitals serve as key participants in organ donation, conducting diverse educational activities such as lectures, seminars, and distribution of informational brochures. They also provide professional training for medical staff to enhance their expertise in organ donation and transplantation.
• Mass media Activities: Media platforms play a crucial role in disseminating information about organ donation through various channels, including television, radio, newspapers, and the internet. This helps shape public opinion and increase awareness. Additionally, higher education institutions have integrated organ donation into their curricula, further expanding the reach of educational efforts.
• Red Cross Society Activities: The Red Cross Society provides legal and policy support for organ donation, manages the registration process, and offers humanitarian care and memorial services for donors and their families. It also conducts comprehensive training programs for organ donation coordinators to improve their professional capabilities.
Conclusion: The promotion of organ donation in China is a complex and multi-level system involving coordinated efforts from hospitals, the mass media, and the Red Cross Society. Each stakeholder plays a unique role in enhancing public awareness, providing educational resources, and offering support services. This collaborative approach has significantly contributed to the development of a sustainable and effective organ donation system in China, setting a valuable example for other countries facing similar challenges.
