Introduction: The Professional Success Program (PSP) is an initiative aimed at addressing the critical shortage of Donation Specialised Nurses (DSNs) and enhancing their professional development and career progression. DSNs play a vital role in facilitating organ and tissue donation across Victoria and leading the Clinical Practice Improvement Plan (CPIP) at their respective health services. The PSP is designed to engage and retain this specialized workforce by providing structured development opportunities tailored to individual strengths and interests.
Body: The program consists of two parts:
Self-assessment and Development: This phase includes a baseline engagement survey, Gallup Strength Finder Assessment, DISC Assessment, and various interactive sessions facilitated by external consultants. These tools help DSNs understand their strengths, improve working relationships, and develop leadership skills.
Professional Development Pathway: Based on the assessments and individual interests, DSNs can pursue career progression in areas such as education, management, donor family support, project management, and other specialized roles. This phase includes targeted training, mentorship, and practical experience to support their career goals.
The PSP aims to enhance employee engagement, reduce burnout, and increase productivity, ultimately contributing to the retention and well-being of DSNs. The program's effectiveness was evaluated through repeated engagement surveys (2022-2024) and ongoing feedback.
The repeated engagement surveys conducted over the last 3 years have shown positive improvements in engagement scores, validating the program's effectiveness. Key areas of improvement were identified and discussed in various settings, including network meetings, health service discussions, and one-on-one sessions. These focused discussions have been instrumental in addressing specific needs and fostering a supportive environment for DSNs.
Conclusion: Overall, the PSP has proven to be a valuable initiative for the organisation, ensuring the well-being and professional growth of DSNs, ultimately leading to better outcomes in organ and tissue donation across Victoria. The continued commitment to this program will further strengthen the DSN workforce and enhance the quality of care provided to the community.
